Location and Environment

Yeh Mangening Temple is located in Banjar Sarasada, Tampaksiring Village, Kec. Tampaksiring, Kab.Gianyar. Yeh Mangening temple is built on a rather deep valley of Pakerisan river with its rather steep cliffs. This temple was founded on the slopes of the eastern cliff which is a witness to the history of the past (Ancient Bali, 10-13 AD). Mangening temple site was established has been carefully calculated by its founder, not only in terms of religion but also from the beauty of the environment. In the location of this Mangening Temple was founded Pura, called Pura Yeh Mangening. To the north of the Mangening temple is Tirta Empul, south of the Kawi Tebing Gunung Kawi complex and on the west there is Sakenan Temple, where it contains many ancient statues. Land use on the Yeh Mangening Temple site, is used for agriculture, plantation, on cliffs planted with various types of hard vegetation.


Archaeological Remains

Archaeological remains contained in Yeh Mangening Temple are as follows.
1. Temple
    Temple which when determined in condition of not intact, which live only part of foot structure of       temple only. And the results of research in 1982 by BP3 Bali. Mangening temple can be restored         as it is today
2. Lingga Yoni
    Lingga Yoni placed in the temple room is very sacred by the community penyungsungnya and can      only be opened during the ceremony (piodalan).
    The inscription associated with the Mangening Temple is a Batuan inscription dates back to 944          Saka or 1022 AD, using ancient Javanese script or language and declared by the king of Marakata     (Goris 1954: 15). In this inscription mentioned representatives of rock villages facing and                    reporting  to the deceased king who washed in er wka (that is the king of Udayana). Batuan                  villagers     assigned to preserve the garden of the deceased king located in the nail and held a              ceremony at the temple of Baturan. Realizing how heavy the task is, they are exempt from certain      taxes (Suarbhawa, 2003: 13). In relation to er wka, there is an estimate is Mangening temple, er          means the water of the local language yeh, while wka means child or the forehead, so it becomes        yeh cening, long changed to Yeh Mangening is Udayana King temple dating from 10th century            AD.


Water sources

Yeh Mangening temple is built on the valley of the river Pakerisan which has the most springs among other sites. These springs are sanctified by the community so they are called tirthas. All the holy spring water in Yeh Mangening Temple is accommodated in the sacred pond, then the water is streamed through the pancoran-pancoran existing in each sacred pond. The holy water that flows through the pancoran is used in Hindu ritual ceremonies. The sources of the springs purified and used as tirtha are as follows.

3. Tirtha Keben
4. Tirtha Dedari
5. Tirtha Angsoka
6. Tirtha Melela

8. Tirtha Arum
9. Tirtha Merta Sari
10. Tirtha Telaga Waja
11. Tirtha Spell Dasa Mala

The outflow of these sources of water is accommodated in the absorption pond (well) which is then channeled through a ditch to the Pakerisan River which is used to irrigate the rice fields in Tampaksiring, Pejeng, Bedulu, and surrounding villages.

Vegetation

The types of vegetation grown around the site are: banyan, pole, pomegranate, candlenut, pangi, coconut, enau, bamboo, tehep, jackfruit, majagau. The tree that is sacred is a banyan tree and under it there is a spring, by people called Tirtha Kamaning and Keris. At the source of this spring was built pelinggih Dewi Gangga. Regarding the trees around the site are not allowed to cut or seek indiscriminate because it is protected by custom rules, for people who violate custom sanctions in the form of ceremonies.
